I have to admit, I’m a little bit biased when I listen to music. Growing up in the early nineties, I was exposed to a ton of vastly different music, ranging from classic rock legends like Led Zeppelin and Jimmi Hendrix, to hip-hop icons like Run D.M.C. and N.W.A, to American luminaries like the Beatles, and it’s safe to say that music played a pretty big role during my formative years. As such, I have a special place in my heart for classics, and any remix of a classic is automatically met with trepidation.
When I first heard the newly-formed, Brooklyn-based duo, AKKI and ZEV‘s, remix of The Police’s classic, “Roxanne,” I was a little skeptical initially, but all it took was just one play through their remix. and they had won me over.
Sting’s vocals are essentially kept untouched on the remix, rather AKKI and ZEV choose to focus their attention on the production. The duo gives the 80s classic a groovy house backbone, complete with deep, pulsating bass lines and an old school disco vibe that harkens to early days of dance music in America. It rocks an old-school-meets-new-school feel, like we just collided with the 70s, that I can seriously dig. Check it out below.
